Renowned for its wholesome lifestyle, the Mediterranean has deep-rooted cultural practices and rich culinary traditions. As the New Year begins, many Mediterranean's often blend their ancient customs with modern aspirations, creating resolutions that honour both personal growth and communal well-being. In this blog I am sharing some traditional Mediterranean-inspired resolutions that can guide you toward a healthier, more balanced life in 2025.

The first resolution to aspire to is to cook more homemade meals. To truly embrace the Mediterranean lifestyle home-cooked meals are a priority. These will be enjoyed by yourself and your loved ones. Spending more time in the kitchen, having fun experimenting with nutritious and simple recipes are a great idea. If you check out Cucina Povera style dishes you can even save yourself some money. Dishes like bean soups, baked fish with herbs, or a vibrant vegetable stew can be both comforting and flavourful. Cooking at home also allows you to control what ingredients go in and keep an eye on portion sizes, this essentially making it easier to stick to a balanced diet. In the UK we are swamped with processed food. The quality of it is generally getting worse with reports of manufacturers swapping out expensive ingredients with additives or starch, while still increasing the price. Learn to cook from scratch and your body will thank you for it.

The second resolution is to embrace eating seasonally. This is one of the pillars of the Mediterranean diet that seems to have been lost in the UK due to supermarkets supplying the same fruit and veg all year round. Focusing on using seasonal, locally sourced produce means that you can celebrate the freshest ingredients available. Why not step away from the supermarket and try out a local farm shop or farmers market. For January in the UK think hardy root veg i.e. potatoes, parsnips, beetroot, carrots, celeriac, swede, turnips and squash. Other vegetables include brussel sprouts, celery, chicory, Jerusalem artichokes, kale, leeks, onions, red cabbage, salsify, savoy cabbage, spring greens, spring onions, mushrooms and white cabbage. Seasonal fruits include apple and pears. This list made me think of a delicious chicory, pear and stilton salad. Not only does this practice support sustainable agriculture, but it also ensures your meals are bursting with nutrients and flavour.

The third resolution is reducing food waste. Being sustainable is ingrained in Mediterranean tradition. So, by making a goal of minimising food waste by repurposing leftovers, planning your meals and composting scraps is a great one to get into. You can get creative with dishes like soups, frittatas, bakes and casseroles that transform odds and ends into something delicious. If you have leftover Christmas fayre, don't throw it away you can eat panettone for breakfast, create meat broth for a ravioli soup or use up smoked salmon by topping puff pastry with the fish and a creamy dill sauce.

The fourth resolution is to work on strengthening social connections. The importance of community is a priority in the Mediterranean. This year, resolve to nurture your relationships with everyone around you. Examples include; hosting a dinner for family and friends, joining a local club such as an art class, or by simply making time for meaningful conversations. Strong social connections are linked to improving mental health and longevity, it's a win win. Greeks have a practice of "philoxenia", this means hospitality, let it inspire you to embrace simplicity and generosity.

The fifth resolution is to practice mindful eating. In the Mediterranean, meals are not all about the food, but also seen as an opportunity to connect with family and friends. This year, consider adopting the practice of mindful eating. Try to slow down, savour each bite, and eliminate distractions like screens at mealtime. Mindful eating prevents overeating, enhances digestion and deepens your appreciation for the food on your plate. French say "Bon Appetit" and the Italians say "Buon Appetito", this means good appetite. Come to your meals with a good appetite, by avoiding snacks in-between meals. You will be truly hungry, and this will heighten the enjoyment of your meals.

The sixth resolution is by incorporating daily movement. Physical activity traditionally in the Mediterranean rarely happens in the gym. It’s woven into everyday life. Walking to the market and carrying the bags home, tending to a garden, and enjoying a seaside stroll. Make a resolution to integrate gentle, consistent movement into your day. Try a passeggiata which is leisurely evening walk. Enjoy seeing the beautiful sunset or the stars, and if you bump into friends and neighbours remember to say hello and wish them a happy new year.

The seventh resolution is to prioritise relaxation and rest. The Mediterranean’s slower pace of life is a reminder to prioritise rest. Adopting this resolution and setting aside time for relaxation, whether it’s through enjoying a daily siesta, enjoying a good book or adopting meditative practices. Adequate rest supports overall health and wellbeing, and helps you tackle life’s challenges with renewed energy.

The eighth resolution is to embrace life long learning. Many Mediterranean communities value personal growth and continuous education. Whether it’s picking up a new language, learning to prepare a new dish, or diving into the history of the region, set a goal that interests you and expand your horizons.

The last resolution but not least, is to celebrate life and honour gratitude. The Mediterranean lifestyle encourages celebrating life’s simple pleasures, from a shared meal to a breath taking sunset. Make it a habit to reflect on your blessings each day and do things in life that you enjoy and make you happy.
